3 Best Successes

Overall I feel really good about my paper and the arguments I decided to use, although I will admit some are more solid than others. I think the 3 biggest successes of my paper are:

1) Listening to music makes us happier by releasing dopamine into the brain. I feel like mostly everyone can really relate to this argument because I can't go a day without music, and when I'm in a bad mood it truly does make me feel better.

2) Listening to or engaging in making music keeps our minds young throughout the inevitable aging process because it is a total workout for the brain, which makes sense because with all the different instruments and beats, there's a lot for our minds to decode and make sense of. I think this is a solid point because everyone goes through the aging process and most people love music, two common denominators.

3) My third success in my opinion is the fact that music helps patients before and after surgery because it decreases anxiety beforehand and increases relaxation afterwards. Surgery is very scary and can be very serious, and it seems to be more of a go to procedure nowadays. I think it's really cool that something as simple as music can make that process a little easier.

Chapter 23 Reaction and Review

Personal Reaction:
This chapter is all about revising and editing your paper and it is incredibly applicable to me as of right now, especially since I have to work out what my next steps will be for my paper and what needs editing. The chapter has loads of information to help people but I think the most important are the graphics pages 459, 460, 462, and 473. They all detail just what kind of work and thought have to go into editing, for example. One graphic asks whether or not you have read your paper aloud or to another person. This is more important than many might realize as many mistakes can be found this way. Overall this is a good read and is important to anyone who is going to or is currently editing their papers.

Professional Review:
Chapter 23 offers a variety of tools in which shall aid people in tackling their papers. From "editing and proofreading" to "revising for emphasis, conciseness, and clarity" this chapter offers countless tools that shall be invaluable to anyone who is struggling with their papers. What might be the most important is the bit on chapter 460 thru 461 on thesis revision. This is a common error among students and is so easily addressed that it is unfortunate that most miss it. Many a time has a student written a paper where the thesis goes one way and then the paper proves the opposite. Had the student either
A. Stuck with his thesis
or
B. Gone back and changed it
Than the student would be in far less dire straights. Either way the chapter has something for everyone and is worth reading extensively if one gets the time. If not than it's no matter as it is also important to skim or even pick out parts that interest you, this chapter is a wealth of knowledge just waiting to be tapped.

Celebrity Obsession Essay Evaluation

Image by me (@colorenthusiast on Instagram)

My professor assigned this blog post to my classmates and me. She asked us to write about 3 things we like about our papers and 3 things we think our professor would like about our papers.

3 Things I like about my paper:

  1. I like how I wrote about the negative impact of celebrity obsession on celebrities, media contributors, and the general public. By addressing the negative impact on each of these people groups, I am exploring all the ways celebrity obsession negatively affects our society as a whole.
  2. I like how I address how our celebrity-obsessed culture affects these people groups in physical as well as psychological ways.
  3. There is still some more research and integration to be done, but so far I think I have been successful in gathering source information to properly support the points I have made.
3 Things I think my professor will like about my paper:
  1. I am currently working on making each of my points stay focused on my thesis. Once my paper is done, I think my professor will like that I keep my paper on track and link each point directly to my thesis.
  2. I'm still researching and integrating source information, but once I include all the information I intend to, I think my professor will like to see all the information I have gathered to support my paper.
  3. To be very specific, I think she will like how I address the negative effects celebrity obsession has on the paparazzi and other media contributors. This concept has not been addressed too often by others, so I think she will like that I am exploring this idea in my essay.
Written by Hayley Leach

Three things that I think people will enjoy and make my paper great!

1. My sources are all from reliable people who are well known in their field

2. My paper is filled with passion as I am able to write about what I find interesting

3. I think my paper will be informative and helpful to those who read it as it will put religion in to context.

Chapter 12 Amnesty Blog Post

Supporting a Position with Sources

Personal Reaction

While I was reading this I couldn't help but roll my eyes, 'here we go again.' I thought to myself as I began reading this chapter, I thought I knew it all when it came to quotes, paraphrasing, etc. In the end I cannot explain just how wrong I was. I enjoyed pages 236 and 237 immensely as they provided a visual representation of what I should do in my papers. Visuals always help me internalize information so the fact that they had this really helped me take steps forward to improve my writing. Page 233 was also good because it gave an example of a working thesis, which is detailed that it can change over time. I think that works especially well with my way of writing as I tend to deviate from my thesis while I write my paper.

Professional Reaction

Chapter 12 is important for writers of all skill levels, it gets back to the basis and essentially the backbone of any paper. Quotes are the most important part as they provide evidence which you may then pull from. Your thesis is also incredibly important and they detail just how to make it work in this chapter. However what had the most impact in my opinion was page 239 on paraphrasing, it detailed just what different kinds you can run into and how to use them effectively in your paper. This was probably the most important piece about the chapter.

Chapter 23 Reading Response

Personal Reaction: This chapter on revising and editing didn't come as a complete surprise to me because I do believe that it's one of the most significant steps in the writing process, I appreciate other people's view points especially, and the assistance in improving my writing. I enjoyed the word revision being referred to as "Seeing again", simply because I've never heard that reference and it couldn't be worded better in my opinion. On page 460 it talks about considering your audience while revising and that can be somewhat difficult because you want to convince everyone that your argument is right, but not everyone perceives things the same. It's crucial t to be confident with your writing regardless. On page 462 the book talks about working with peer editors which is helpful to not only college students, but their entire school career starting in elementary school from what I can recall. I like how on page 464 it talks about decoding comments because I've never considered didn't options like long comments compared to specific, that being said I'm usually short and to the point when editing.

Professional Reaction: I would recommend this chapter to anyone writing a paper because as I said before, I think editing and revising is a very significant step, not to mention it doesn't hurt to read and learn new information. I think especially once you've read over your own paper multiple times, obvious changes that need to be made become less apparent, so it's really important to have other's edit your papers as well.

Chapter 23: Strategies for Revising and Editing

Image: proofread.club
Personally, I think revising is one of the most time consuming parts of writing a paper. However, once the revision part is done, I get to edit and proofread, which are some of my favorite things to do when writing a paper. It feels so good to look over my writing and make sure everything looks good and sounds good together, as well as fixing any grammar and spelling mistakes along the way. I would like to be a proofreader for others someday, so it was interesting to read about proofreading.

Professionally, I had never really read much about the definitions of "revising," "editing," and "proofreading." It was interesting to learn how others define these terms. Below are the definitions of the terms from pages 459 and 473:

  • Revising: seeing, discovering, conceiving, or shaping again. This happens throughout the process of writing. Macro revising is the term used to describe the kind of revision in which the writer makes large changes that change the entire effect, purpose, direction, or organization of the paper.
  • Editing: correcting or fixing grammar, punctuation, and other mechanics
  • Proofreading: checking correctness, accuracy, spelling, and other mistakes
While these definitions do give a basic overview of what these terms mean, I would argue that editing is the checking of all technical mistakes, including spelling. I would also argue that proofreading is checking the content or deeper meaning of your writing; making sure it properly conveys the intended message, makes sense to your audience, and has the right tone, feel, and personality.

Lastly, I had never thought about why it is necessary to revise. The authors explain different reasons why someone would need to revise and how it could be accomplished.

One can revise for:
  • Purpose and Thesis
  • Audience
  • Structure and Support
  • Emphasis, Conciseness, and Clarity

Chapter 35 Reading Response

Personal Reaction: There wasn't anything I read in this chapter that came as a surprise to me. I do have to agree however that bringing all your research together and beginning the drafting process is probably the most difficult step when writing an argument paper or anything else. One piece of information that was somewhat new to me is the thesis and answer method simply because I've never heard those methods be referred to like that which I found kind of interesting. I also enjoy how in the very beginning of the chapter the book lists reasons as to why writing a research paper is important because through the entire process it's good to keep those reasons in mind and to remember what you're doing has a purpose.

Professional Reaction: In all honesty I think the entire chapter contains useful information, despite how good one can write you'd be surprised what new things you can learn about a topic one is already very knowledgeable of. More importantly though this chapter would be useful for anyone who struggles when it comes to writing research papers because there are a lot of helpful tips to ease one through the process from beginning to end. Also through these tips it'll help people to figure what does and doesn't work for them when it comes to writing, and one can start to develop their own method of writing.

Chapter 35: Writing Your Research Paper

Image: keepcalm-o-matic.co.uk

Personal Reaction:

First of all, this chapter is very short, which is nice. That said, this chapter includes some interesting concepts.

One is the idea of trying different ways to write a beginning and end (or the intro and conclusion) of your paper. You can write your intro and conclusion after you have written the body of your essay, or start with an event or example, build to the finish, and end with a call-to-action. You could also start by summing up the opinions, ideas and research of others and then continue the rest of the paper by explaining where you stand and why.

This will not only be helpful to keep in mind when writing for school, I may also use these methods when writing on my personal blog and movie review blog.

Professional Reaction:

It may be helpful in the future to know the two methods of writing a research paper: the thesis method and the answer method.

Thesis Method: Come up with a thesis statement and use it to form your paper, including points and evidence to support this thesis.

Answer Method: For this method, you do not need to state a thesis at all, but instead write your paper in a way that answers a main research question. This method may require more revision time because you are creating your points to answer this question as you go.

Music Therapy Essay Outline

Thesis: Music therapy is the best natural remedy we can reward ourselves with.

There are numerous arguments that support why music therapy is truly amazing and beneficial, I picked several that I thought made the most sense and would have the most evidence behind them.

1) Music makes people happier because it causes the brain to release a feel-good neurotransmitter called dopamine.

2) Music lowers stress and improves health because it decreases the stress hormone cortisol, which counteracts the effects of chronic stress, and needless to say stress causes 60% of illness and disease.

3) Over 30% of Americans suffer from insomnia, and studies show that listening to music before or during sleep makes for a much more restful night.

4) Unfortunately there are thousands of people around the world trying to cope with the side affects of chronic disease and illness like cancer and geriatric/ICU patients, etc., but studies show that music therapy for these patients actually reduces pain.

5) It has been proven that listening/engaging in musical activities raises one's IQ and academic performance.

6) Despite age, Listening to music and playing instruments help keep our minds young because it exercises all parts of the brain which is very healthy.

7) Studies show that among young children, musical activities such as music class in elementary school increases verbal intelligence, which is why it's extremely important that we keep music as part of the required curriculum.

8) Strokes are the 5th largest leading cause of death in the United States, and they happen for various reasons, some unknown. However it's been proven that music therapy does in fact increase recovery in stroke patients.

9) Surgery can be a very scary and risky move for anyone, but studies show that music helps surgery patients by decreasing anxiety before the procedure and increases relaxation afterwards.

Chapter 30 & 32 Reading Response

Chapter 30 Personal Reaction: Generally speaking, throughout all of the writing courses I've taken, this chapter did take me by surprise because I've never seen anything remotely close to "Planning your research project" like I did in this chapter. More specifically is the different steps it takes you through such as the research process listed on page 627. As far as argument papers, I've usually been advised to avoid asking questions as far as the topic/thesis, so I was also surprised to read on page 628 "Asking a research question", which I can imagine only makes it easier for the writer when it comes to research, what EXACTLY am I looking for? I know that nowadays finding information online is extremely convenient, so I appreciate that the book talks about different options like going to the library and personal interviews on page 229, which is why with this paper I'm trying really hard to get interviews with professionals on the subject because it's so much more than online sources.

Chapter 30 Professional Reaction: As far as my professional reaction to this chapter, I feel that ALL the information is relevant, especially for this part of the course where research plays an extremely relevant role. No matter how experienced one might be with writing, you can always learn more. Between the research process, learning about different sources to use, and useful ways to store that information regarding that topic, etc. I found this chapter to be very important throughout the process of this paper thus far, and I would highly recommend this chapter to anyone who needs to do a research project.

Chapter 32 Personal Reaction: My overall personal reaction for this chapter is appreciative because finding resources for any type of paper can be difficult, especially if it's online. Something that will ALWAYS stick with me is stay away from Wikipedia and .com resources, try and stay with .org or .edu. I understand that nowadays online research is the new and best thing, but it kind of frustrates me that in this chapter online resources is discussed more than others. That being said however I do like that it talks about finding sources through the library and interviewing experts in the field of the subject that one has picked, I still believe those resources are much more valuable than what one might find online.

Chapter 32 Professional Reaction: As with ALL of our textbook chapters so far, I would highly recommend this one to anyone who has research to do because it covers all the grounds of different sources that a writer may or may not use. Like I said before, online research is very fast and convenient, but I personally believe that using sources like books and personal interviews can not only make one's paper unique, but stand out as well because of the variety. That being said this chapter can really help one to make their paper a little different by using the different sources that are available to us besides what's online.

Celebrity Obsession Essay Outline

Image: bjacy.blogspot.com

Thesis: Celebrity obsession negatively impacts our country.

1. How celebrities are negatively impacted:

  • Invasion of Privacy - I'd like to point out in my essay that celebrity obsession leads to the invasion of celebrities' personal and private lives. Those who invade celebrities' privacy are usually the media, especially tabloids, gossip magazines, and the paparazzi, as well as fans (and haters) of particular celebrities. The personal information and photos obtained and shared by companies and individuals can lead to other issues, such as...
  • Development of Psychological Issues - When celebrities are obsessed over, idolized, and featured all over the media on a consistent basis, they can become conceited, believing that they are or need to be "perfect" in order to stay famous and important. On the other hand, for many celebrities, this pressure to be or appear perfect is too much for them, which can result in the development of psychological issues and disorders, such as eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression. Also, celebrities who struggle with these things are constantly being watched and reported on as they are suffering with these issues, which can make the situation even worse.
  • Exposed to Danger and Violation - Because our country is so obsessed with gaining information about celebrities, the public can learn where celebrities live, work, and hang out. The paparazzi and even those who hate celebrities can gain access to this information, which exposes celebrities to stalking, harassment, or even physical abuse.
2. How the press/paparazzi is negatively impacted:
  • Contributors to the media develop a negative view of celebrities - Writers, editors, reporters, and photographers use celebrities to make money and gain business, which makes them see celebrities as "something" instead of someone. hey don't see celebrities as humans with feelings, but rather as something to use for financial gain. This attitude towards celebrities can be harmful to the press as well as celebrities.
  • The press/paparazzi lose their sense of morality and boundaries - From my research, I have found that members of the press will lie, cheat, disobey rules, and invade privacy to get a good story. There is certainly a problem with our society when its celebrity obsession leads to this kind of behavior of the press.
3. How the general public is negatively impacted:
  • Unhealthy Idolization of and Addiction to Celebrities - When individuals are constantly exposed to celebrity gossip and other information about celebrities, they can develop an unhealthy attachment to particular celebrities, even when they have never met these celebrities. For some individuals who have interacted with their favorite celebrity, they become addicted to that celebrity. They may even stalk them, or try to see them any time they can. This can be harmful to these individuals much like any other addiction.
  • Psychological Issues - Celebrity obsession of the public can also lead to other issues, such as eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. This can occur because celebrities are often portrayed as skinny, fit, and unrealistically beautiful, which can make fans want to be just like their favorite celebrities, at whatever cost. While it may be true when people say that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery," this extreme form of imitation is self-destructive and unhealthy.
  • Focus on Celebs, Ignore More Important Issues - When our country spends a lot of time and money on the obsession and exposure of celebrities, we are not spending as much time, money, and energy on working to solve issues in our community. I'd like to point out the fact that, while many people in our country find the status of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's relationship so important, there are other people in America (and in other countries) who struggle with homelessness, poverty, and problems caused by natural disasters. These issues are more important to me than what happens in the personal lives of celebrities, and I think our country should encourage people to spend more time, energy, and money on solving local issues in their communities.

Chapter 30 & 32 Response

Chapter 30: Planning and Managing Your Research Project

Image: spatiallyrelevent.org
In this chapter of The Bedford Guide for College Writers, the authors give a suggested order of operations for how to go about the process of researching. In my copy of this textbook, the overview of this process is on page 647, but I have found that there are slight differences from other copies. So, the overview may be on another page in the same general area in another copy of the book. Below is this order of operations, followed by short descriptions of each part of the process, based on the overview and other parts of the chapter.

The Research Process:

  1. Engage - find an interesting topic, develop a question about that topic, and proceed to answer your question (this will be your thesis)
  2. Inquire - come up with research questions to guide your research
  3. Organize - decide on a plan or method of how to research, as well as how to organize information you gather through your research
  4. Investigate - gather source info, quote, paraphrase, and summarize sources, and begin your bibliography or "Works Cited" page.
  5. Search - look for reliable and relevant information to answer your research questions
  6. Synthesize - integrate source information to support the answers to your research questions. While doing this, make sure to cite sources in order to avoid plagiarism and use sources to support your thesis.
My Reaction: While this chapter was very short, it did a pretty good job summing up all the different research strategies and techniques, which is impressive. Although, there was not that much information in this chapter that was new to me. That said, it was nice to get a review of things I have already learned about the research process.

Chapter 32: Finding Sources in the Library, on the Internet, and in the Field

Image: cupofteawiththatbookplease.wordpress.com
Personally, I am surprised how detailed this chapter is. It includes little tips and tricks for researching in all three ways: in the library, on the internet, and in the field. I found that I already knew quite a bit about gathering research from the library and the internet, but that I didn't know as much about the different ways to gather information in the field. This chapter definitely educated me about that. According to the authors, one can get information in the field by interviewing, observing, using questionnaires/conducting surveys, corresponding, and attending public and online events. I may be more likely to gather more information in the field because I have been made aware of the different ways in which to go about it.

Professionally, I think I will refer to this chapter in the near future. It contains a lot of very specific information, such as names of particular websites to visit and search through for certain types of information and lists of various kinds of library resources. There is one tip in particular that I think will be most helpful; when searching on a database, if you type a word or partial word followed by an asterisk (*), it will search for all the related terms for that word. For example, if I enter celeb* into the search bar, it will search for celeb, celebs, celebrity, and celebrities. This little trick will save me time searching for each term individually, which will be very helpful.

Chapter 12 Reading Response

Personal Reaction: There really wasn't a whole lot about this chapter that surprised me, however on page 243 the table where it shows methods of capturing information from sources is definitely new to me. On page 234 the book talks about starting with a working thesis which I enjoyed because sometimes although I know exactly what my freaking point is, it's hard for me to word it in a way that fits my standards, so It's always nice to be reassured that you can always change it. I think a good tip as far as sources is on page 235 where it discusses thoughtfully reading your sources because you get crazy taking notes and stuff, I find that very useful.

Professional Reaction: Honestly I think this entire chapter would be very useful to anyone writing a paper, but more importantly if said paper calls for outside sources. I think it's extremely relevant for people to know why supporting with sources matters, which is addressed on page 223. Also I think it's good for everyone to find their voice when it comes to writing, which is talked about on page 231. Something that I occasionally struggle with properly listing my sources, which I'm sure is fairly common, luckily the book touches on this subject on page 248 where it explains how to list sources as a college reader would expect. Lastly, I think that the table on page 250 is extremely useful because it describes how to integrate source information effectively.

Chapter 12: Supporting a Position with Sources

Image: adenadesigns.net
Personal Reaction:
Right off the bat, the authors of The Bedford Guide for College Writers explain in chapter 12 that one should not use sources just for the sake of using sources, but as a way of gaining knowledge about the subject and using what others know and say to support your point. Personally, I think this is an interesting concept. After reading about it, I have since noticed how much I learn about a topic by simply looking for sources, even though my final essay won't include information from every article or book I run across on my topic.

Professional Reaction:
The authors gave some good tips to avoid echoing others and include your own voice when paraphrasing and summarizing sources, such as choosing different words and using different sentence structures. Also, they mentioned how easy it is to have your own writing get lost in a sea of sources. While they did make some good suggestions about how to fix this problem, they said nothing about how to avoid it in the first place, which might be helpful for other writers to know. Personally, I prefer to write as much as I can about each point or each section of my paper before I integrate sources. That way, my own voice is the main focus of the paper before sources are mixed in.

Topic and Thesis

1. Topic

Education is one of the greatest tools that we have at our disposal, it can be used for good or bad depending. I believe that America has a lot to learn with education and should emulate other countries who are having incredible success, it is an uphill climb but one that is imperative to the future of out nation. I want to discover different techniques and different ways of going about things, why America is failing and what I can do as a prospective educator to prevent this from happening.

2. Topic + Slant = Thesis

Topic: American Education system vs...

Slant: I believe that through other countries we can find ways to further educate our citizens and provide equality for all involved.

Thesis: That education should be improved using these techniques in order to boost the brain trust in our country and even out issues with equity we have in our schools.

Topic and Thesis Development

Above is my cluster of possible points to make in my next essay. I chose the topic of privacy for celebrities because I have noticed the negative effects media and paparazzi have had on celebrities, their fans, and our society. I also have thought about how the people of our society, mainly celebrities, would benefit positively by allowing celebrities more privacy than they are currently given. This is a controversial issue, due to the fact that the media has long made a profit from invading the privacy of celebrities, but I believe that celebrities should not be so personally invaded and harassed in this way. Therefore, my thesis could be something along the lines of...Celebrities should have more privacy and be given more control of how they appear in the media. I may extend my thesis or change it as I am writing this paper, but this is what came to mind right now.

Written by Hayley Leach

Social Media/Facebook

1. Topic
My topic is concerning Facebook. The classic argument of "Is Facebook good or bad for you?" I plan on researching and expanding my knowledge of the pro's and con's of having a Facebook account. I want to look into and also interview Facebook user's to see what they had to say about Facebook and how it effects their personal lives on a daily basis(or if it doesn't). Like every controversial topic, I what to know the benefits of having an account and how it has help the users in their relationships, career, and networking. On the other hand, I want to know why some user's hate it and have detoured away from it throughout time.

2. Topic + Slant =Thesis:
(Topic) Does Facebook positively or negatively effect your personal life?

(Slant) I believe that Facebook has a positive effect on personal lives because of the idea of always staying connected to family and friends. With your career you can network and build relationships through communication. With networking you can promote your projects, ideas, artwork, photography, etc. and have the ability to share it with millions of people.

(Thesis) The negative and positive effects of Facebook regarding Personal life such as relationships, career, and networking.

Prospectus

1) Listening to music relieves stress/negative thoughts or feelings.

2) Aside from reading my paper, I'm confident that my audience/readers will really put into perspective how they feel before and after they listen to music, despite the genre, lyrics, etc. I think once something like this is brought to ones attention, they'll truly start to realize the positive affects that listening to music has on us and our brains.

3) Personally I know that music makes me feel amazing, even if I'm listening to a sad song. It's incredible that no matter what a specific song might be about, people find a way to relate their life to it. The biggest thing that I don't know about music that would really help my paper is the statistics as far as the effects music has on the brain, the body, our attitudes, etc.

4) In regards to my topic, some questions I have are:
What are the most popular kinds of music that are being listened to today?
Which/what studies show the effect that listening to music has on our brain or overall attitude?
Are there truly people in the world that don't enjoy listening to music, and why?
What are people's responses to music based upon the genre, lyrics, etc?
